Q&A with Gaga’s Artistic Director, Saar Harari

Meet Gaga's artistic director, Saar Harari, and learn about his connection to Gaga's ever-evolving movement language.

Saar Harari has spent “plenty of time” immersed in Gaga. He starting teaching Gaga in New York in 2012, and after returning to Israel, he became Gaga’s artistic director in 2018. In 2021, he reflected on his own process with Gaga and on Gaga’s impact.

What does Gaga mean to you? How does Gaga impact your life, in and out of the studio?
Gaga is a physical language; by using and continuing to practice Gaga, I am able to access my abilities.  Gaga helps me be in the moment, discover my range, and go beyond my familiar limits. Gaga teaches me to become aware of my weaknesses and use them as doors for discoveries and growth. Gaga keeps me and my body fresh and alive; it helps me to go through life with more ease, pleasure and lightness.

What do you enjoy most about teaching Gaga?
I sense and activate my body in new volumes in every class—the discoveries and research are endless. I am inspired by our community of movers: we connect through the pleasure and joy of movement.

Especially now, what do you think Gaga offers us?
Our real home is our body. Gaga brings us back to the things we may have lost touch with. By tuning into our body we can expand our physical research and abilities. We have the chance to connect to ourselves and so many others around the world. Gaga Online is borderless, anyone who wants to join us is welcome, and the sense of community fills me with strength and hope.

Describe the process of becoming and continuing to be a Gaga teacher. How do you invest in the ever-evolving nature of Gaga movement?
My process started 25 years ago with Ohad. Since then, the language has developed in similar way to Apple software…constant updates. I feel Gaga gives us the keys to be researchers, and own our ever-expanding discoveries. A Gaga teacher is first and foremost a committed Gaga user. The research, the discoveries, the pleasure, the joy, and the silliness are all essential parts of our ongoing process.

As teachers, we meet Ohad at least twice a week for classes and methodics sessions. The language and research are in constant development through discussions and feedback sessions.
